The family of a Queensland construction worker who died of skin cancer in 2009 has been awarded a landmark six-figure payout. Rohan Crotty was a carpenter and plasterer by trade, but later worked as a union organiser in a campaign to increase sun awareness on building sites.
Workplace Health and Safety Manager Andrew Ramsay said payouts of this magnitude for skin cancer deaths have previously been rare. He also said that while road workers typically wear long sleeves and other protection the same is not true of workers on building sites. Workcover is trying to change this and the Workcover pay out decision highlights the urgent need for change.
The Workcover decision serves as a wake up call to the Queensland building industry that it must take skin cancer prevention seriously.
